Eurofins Food and Water Testing UK and Ireland has completed the deal for Environmental Laboratory Services (ELS), a provider of water and environmental chemistry testing in Ireland.

The testing business said it can now offer customers a wider range of chemistry testing services with the dairy industry continuing to be an important growth area.

It is the third acquisition in the UK and Ireland in the past 12 months. The price was not disclosed.

ELS portfolio

ELS provides testing services including pesticide analysis, drinking water and waste water compliance and cleaning process validation testing.

The facility can offer same day turnaround on sampling and has recently taken delivery of a second Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer.

Other services include residual solvents analysis by GC-FID and GC-MS, extractables and leachables testing and metals contamination.

It is also the only Irish Laboratory Accredited for Elemental Impurities testing on Drug Products per ICHQ3D/USP232&233.

The firm was owned by Brendan Murray, who sold it to Eurofins but he remains in charge.

The deal adds a testing facility in Cork and 27 employees to the existing portfolio, as well as a distribution and collection network, covering all of Ireland.

Phil Coles, MD of Eurofins Food and Water Testing UK and Ireland, said: “Bringing colleagues from ELS together with Eurofins existing water, environmental and food teams, means we can extend our range of services, maximise opportunities in the Irish market and continue to deliver the successful growth that we have seen in recent years in all of our Irish businesses.”

The other ELS

ELS in Ireland is an individual business and not related to ELS that Eurofins acquired in 2012.

That ELS, based in New Zealand, was part of the Hutt City Council Laboratory and became a private enterprise in 1994.

Eurofins-ELS is comprised of Instrumental Chemistry, General Chemistry, Biological Fluids and Microbiology and is based in a 1450m2 facility.

It opened three satellite labs in Auckland and Christchurch in the middle of last year.

Eurofins Food and Water Testing UK and Ireland is made up of 11 laboratories and is in food, feed and water testing.

The company is part of Eurofins Scientific, an international life sciences company which provides analytical testing services to clients across multiple industries.
