Nestlé’s Dr Jörg Hager will deliver a keynote address at the second Healthy Ageing APAC Summit, where he will assess the changes needed in nutritional recommendations for an ageing population.

Dr Hager, Head of the Metabolic Health Department at Nestlé’s Institute of Health Science, will take to the stage at the Singapore event organised by FoodNAvigator-Asia and NutraIngredients-Asia, which will be held from July 9 to 11.

He will discuss how today's dietary standards and recommendations for food intake are based on values determined in relatively young, healthy individuals. Meanwhile, our understanding of the needs for an elderly population are quite rudimentary.

He will assess how we can fill these knowledge gaps and what it means for the development of dietary and nutritional concepts.

Key takeaways will include:

  • A  review of nutritional standards and their meaning for the ageing population
  • The challenges in defining specific nutrient needs: age, sex, geography, consumer perceptions
  • Opportunities for societies, health implications and new business models

The Asia-Pacific region is currently home to about 60% of the world's population of older people, defined as those aged 60 years or older, and the number of seniors expected to more than double from 600 million in 2018 to nearly 1.3 billion by 2050.

This means the demand for nutrition and food products suitable for the elderly population will soar, while younger people are increasingly aware that the nutrition and health choices they make today will affect their quality of life in older age.

Other confirmed speakers at the event include:

Dr Siow Ying Tan, PepsiCo’s R&D Global External Innovation Lead of Academic Partnership

Belinda Reynolds, Director of Research, Product Development and Emerging Markets, Bioceuticals

Dr Okada Yumika Group Manager Supplements Research Group, FANCL

Dr Reshmi Rajendran, Director of Danone’s global R&I Precision Nutrition D-Lab.

This event will look at how the nutrition and food industry can meet the needs of the rapidly ageing populations of today, and more crucially, tomorrow.

Editor-in-Chief of both titles, and Regional Head of APAC at publisher William Reed, Gary Scattergood said: “We are delighted to announce that the event will be attended by a raft of great speakers from so many leading brands, which really goes to show how important this issue is.

“Last year’s event was hugely successful in shining the spotlight on the efforts food and nutrition companies are making to promote healthy changes across all life stages, and this year’s summit is shaping up to even better.”

The 2018 summit was attended by over 170 delegates from across the globe, with 90% revealing in a feedback survey that it met or exceeded their expectations. 85% said it provided significant value to their business.
